Maternity Rights/Benefits?

I hope someone can help me… I’ve tried calling the government office for days and it says the call volume is too high and call back later :(

I live in Ontario, Canada and I am currently 5 months pregnant. I work as a waitress in a restaurant. My pay is VERY low and I’m wondering if there are any extra benefits for maternity leave that anyone knows about for low income mothers. I do live with my boyfriend (baby’s father) and he makes ok money so I’m not sure if that eliminates me. Also, my job cut my shifts by 50% after finding out I am pregnant. Do I have to notify the labour board of this in order to get more benefits. I know they can’t do this to me but if I report them my life will be hell there! I’m so stressed out and don’t know what my options are or what to do and of course can’t get in touch with anyone at Service Canada :(

I would visit this site and make it your starting point:

He who is quick to believe that he has thrown away his benefits, does really throw them away; but he who presses on and adds new benefits to his former ones, forces out gratitude even from a hard and forgetful breast. In the face of many kindnesses, your friend will not dare to raise his eyes; let him see you whithersoever he turns himself to escape from his remembrance of you; encircle him with your benefits.

how much income can you make while on maternity and parental leave in ontario?

i have a few questions, i am planning on starting my maternity leave 4 weeks before my due date. Now my employer has a program called the maternity top up plan which covers the 2 week waiting period that i will have, however it doesnt pay that out until after the baby is born. does anyone know how this will effect my Ei?
also my work gives out cheques every quater as part of a profit charing prgram. it usually work out to about a full cheque and even on maternity leave i will be receiveng this? will this also effect my ei? the only answer i can find so far is im aloud 50$ a week and anything after that is doller for doller but how does that work when it is a one time payment every 3 months
please help!!!

When you receive that payment you have to call and report the income, it is income regardless of where it comes from or how often you get it, when you are on maternity leave the assumption is you are not making any income for the simple fact you are staying home taking care of your baby.

When I went on Maternity leave last year I also received a profit sharing cheque and when I received it, I called to report it and they took off the cheque amount from my entitlement.

Maternity EI is the same a regular EI just you do not have to file reports for the time you are on it. With your top up plan you will have to report that as well, and the same situation will apply, they will take off that amount from your cheque if you are already in receipt of EI when you get your top up money.

Bottom Line: any money you make or receive while on Maternity leave you are best to claim it so that you do not get yourself in trouble and have to repay back all your benefits.

There is a simple answer to this problem: Sage payroll. Sage payroll software provides a comprehensive system that allows you to keep track of all your employees, pay structures, pay periods, and lets you know at a glance who is sick, who has jury duty, or who is on maternity leave. It doesn’t matter if your employees are paid hourly, or receive a fixed monthly salary, this business solution will make the payroll process organized and uncomplicated.
