is there any monetary assistance i can get during maternity leave? any helpful hints to prepare, financially?
i live in Oregon, and i plan to take a full 12 wks FMLA leave when my baby is born (in my job it will be unpaid leave). I’m saving money to be able to pay my mortgage and bills for those 3 months, but it’s going to be REALLY tight!! and i don’t know if i can put aside enough money. i’m the main earner, my husband’s job is a bit spotty and seasonal, not quite full time, and he makes only about 2/3 of what i do per hour… he’s looking for something more stable and consistent, but the job market isn’t that great where we live, so we’re “planning for the worst & hoping for the best”…
so, if worse comes to worst, are there any programs that may provide assistance during maternity leave?
I plan to look into the income restrictions for food stamps/WIC, but i’m not sure if they would go by my usual income or if they would go by the income we would have while i’m on leave?
any hints would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks!
I would recomend placing a call to your local department of children and families. They would be able to tell you what the rules and guidelines are. Here in Florida, They go by the past 8 weeks from when you apply, but if you are on leave they go by 1/2 that. They have programs like the ones you mentioned, as well as what is called temporary cash assistance. The requirements of that here is that everyone that can work, must work. So, as long as your husband is making something, it should be fine. You can also contact your power and water company, tell them the situation, and they may be able to help as well. There is a government program that will pay one mortgage or rent payment for you every 7 years, but I don’t know the name of it. Try googeling it and you may be able to find it.
Enter ley words like:
Help with house payments
Help paying bills
Financial aid durring medical leave
government cash assitstance
or any combonation of those. Good luck!
